Delawareans relish their state’s nickname Small Wonder, taking as much pride in the small as in the wonder. Yellowstone National Park, they point out, is larger than diminutive Delaware, as are two Alaskan islands. Despite its tiny size, however — only Rhode Island is smaller — Delaware offers a wealth of beauty and a bonus of serenity Even though it edges the populated corridor between Washington, D.C., and New York City, Delaware retains areas as unblemished today as they were a century ago.
New Castle, Delaware

It's amazing what you can find in your own backyard. Take charming New Castle, Delaware, for instance.
My husband, Paul, and I live across the Delaware River from this former state capital, settled by Dutch immigrants in 1651. Its beautifully restored homes built in the 1600, 1700 and 1800s, cobblestone streets, brick sidewalks and central green are ideal for strolling.
DiscoverSea Shipwreck Museum in Fenwick Island
During our family's annual summer trip to the Delaware shore, we always make a point to visit the DiscoverSea Shipwreck Museum in Fenwick Island. Every year, the museum's displays change as new shipwreck artifacts are recovered. It's almost guaranteed that we'll see something new every time we visit!
Lewes, Delaware

Plenty of history, interesting shopping, neat old homes and the scent of salty air--for me, that defines the perfect town for a day trip. I found all that and more in the charming and historic seaport of Lewes (pronounced "loo-iss"), Delaware.
