Louisiana is nothing less than exotic — a land of steamy swamps and lazy bayous, regal old mansions and tumbledown fishing shacks, Cajuns and Creoles, jambalaya and bouillabaisse. Its lush landscapes — fields engulfed by honeysuckle, kudzu, and wisteria, endless marshes that shimmer in the heat like mirages, swamps where towering bald cypresses are veiled in Spanish moss — are just as remarkable as Louisiana’s culture, which is well known for its distinctive foreignness. Though largely the legacy of the regions French past, Louisiana’s language, folklore, and cuisine, particularly in the southern half of the state, are strongly seasoned by other influences — Spanish, African, West Indian, American Indian — and each lends its own special accent to Louisiana’s cultural potpourri.

Bayou Cabins Bed and Breakfast, Lousiana

If you like rustic charm, good food and Cajun music, I suggest you travel to Breaux Bridge, Louisiana and stay at the Bayou Cabins Bed & Breakfast.

The eight cabins offer the atmosphere of an old Cajun setting. Upon arrival, each guest receives a Cajun lagniappe, or welcoming gift, consisting of delicious homemade snacks. We enjoyed ours while watching a family of ducks from our cabin's large back porch.

Tabasco Pepper Sauce Factory, Louisiana

Add some zing to your next trip to southern Louisiana with a tour of the Tabasco Pepper Sauce Factory on Avery Island.

To get there, you take a 50-cent ferry ride across a small channel to Avery Island, one of five salt-dome islands along Louisiana's Gulf Coast. This salt--a key ingredient in Tabasco sauce--runs as deep underground as Mt. Everest is tall!

Cat Island National Widlife Refuge, St. Francisville, Louisiana

In the beautiful Cat Island National Wildlife Refuge outside St. Francisville, Louisiana, I found the national champion bald cypress tree--it's 83 feet tall, 54 feet in circumference and 17 feet in diameter!
