Nebraska sweeps to the horizon in broad, gently undulating hills and open, sundrenched vistas. These treeless expanses perplexed some of the first white people who ventured onto the prairie in the 19th century Maj. Stephen H. Long, after exploring the region in 1819, concluded that it was “destined by the barrenness of its soil, the inhospitable character of its climate, and by other physical disadvantages, to be the abode of perpetual desolation.” The lack of trees, however, belied the fruitfulness of the plain. Nebraska in actuality pulses with life.
