South Carolinians like to say that Charleston is the place where the Ashley and Cooper rivers join to form the Atlantic Ocean. The enormous pride embodied in the joke seems oddly incongruous with this quiet Atlantic seaboard state tucked between the mountains of North Carolina and the red clay hills of Georgia. South Carolina’s beauty is subtle rather than spectacular, emanating from grassy savannas and shady pinewoods, lonely marshlands and windswept beaches.

Boone Hall Plantation, South Carolina

I thoroughly enjoyed a recent visit to stately Boone Hall Plantation near Charleston, South Carolina. Established in the 1680s by Major John Boone (no relation to Daniel!), it's one of America's oldest working plantations.

Old Sheldon Church Ruins, South Carolina

The Old Sheldon Church ruins near Beaufort on the South Carolina coast aren't on any map, but this peaceful and picturesque site is worth a visit if you're ever in the area.

Originally known as the Church of Prince William's Parish, the building was built between 1745 and 1755. It's considered one of the first Greek temple imitations in America.

Brookgreen Sculpture Gardens, South Carolina

I found a lovely oasis south of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina: Brookgreen Sculpture Gardens, the oldest and largest attraction of its kind in the United States.
