My husband, Myles, and I are big fans of old Western movies and television shows. So when we planned a trip to Kanab, Utah, we had to stay at the 89-room Parry Lodge, where celebrities like John Wayne, Glen Ford and Roy Rogers stayed while filming Westerns.
The lobby walls are filled with photos of old-time Western movie stars who stayed here. We learned that Whit Parry established the hotel in 1929, and that buses took the actors out on location each morning.
Most of the hotel rooms are named after famous actors. We stayed in the Gabby Hayes room--and yes, we're old enough to remember that Gabby was famous for playing Windy Halliday, the sidekick to William Boyd's Hopalong Cassidy (see page 28 for information about the Hopalong Cassidy Cowboy Museum).
Kanab is on U.S. Highway 89 in southwest Utah. (It's about 19 miles from Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park, featured on page 21 of the July/Aug issue.) Room rates at the Parry Lodge (89 E. Center St.) range from $62 to $73 a night for double occupancy.
